New to version control? Start with What is version control?, then Getting started. Everything after that is short, one-topic pages: a page per feature, a page per plugin panel, and the guardrails that keep your work safe.

Saving a version
Changes is where you turn your current work into a saved version. Write a short note about what you did, then save it.
Open Changes.
It lists every file you have touched since your last version.
Pick what to include.
Everything is included by default. Untick anything you want to leave out.
Write a short note.
A word or two about what changed is enough, like "Fixed the eyes."
Hit Commit version.
Krita VCS locks briefly while it saves, so nothing gets interrupted partway through.
